Science has progressed a lot over the years. Earlier, science was just a process of replacing false theories with true ones. Long ago, Greek scientists would refer to themselves as natural philosophers, due to the fact that science was not very progressed back then. So most, if not all, of the science they did were theories/philosophies that were waiting to be proven once the science world had developed more. Most of there theories came to be by a process of asking a question and trying to reason with known fact. Often, their theories would contradict to what everyone thought was true. Though, it went against popular belief, the facts would be on their side, as they used them to form some idea of what was true. Although the facts were on their sides, sometimes people would discover that with further examining, the previous belief was incorrect. That is how most science was for thousands of years, until they had progressed enough to perform experiments rather than thinking of what it could be.
